Overview

Brahmatal Trek is one of the most popular winter treks in Uttarakhand, offering a perfect blend of adventure, snow, and panoramic Himalayan views. Situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, this trek is known for its snow-covered trails, alpine forests, frozen lake, and breathtaking views of Himalayan peaks.

The Brahmatal Trek, tucked in the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, is one of the most enchanting winter treks in India. Renowned for its snow-clad landscapes, frozen alpine lakes, dense oak and rhododendron forests, and sweeping views of towering Himalayan peaks, Brahmatal has become a dream destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. Unlike many other treks in Uttarakhand that are mostly summer favorites, Brahmatal stands out as a true winter wonderland, offering a rare opportunity to walk across snowy trails, camp near frozen lakes and witness some of the most awe-inspiring Himalayan vistas at an accessible altitude.

At an elevation of around 12,250 feet (3,735 meters) the trek is moderately challenging making it suitable for both seasoned trekkers and fit beginners. The journey not only provides mesmerizing natural beauty but also connects trekkers to mythological tales as it is believed that Lord Brahma himself meditated at the very lake that gives the trek its name — Brahmatal. .

Detailed Itinerary

Route: Rishikesh – Devprayag – Rudraprayag – Karnaprayag – Tharali – Lohajung
Highlights: Confluence of rivers, Himalayan villages, forested valleys

Overview
The journey begins from Rishikesh, the gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas. The drive takes you along the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, passing through the famous Panch Prayags (river confluences). Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag are particularly significant, where myth and nature beautifully merge.

As the road ascends, the scenery shifts from wide valleys to pine and oak forests, with charming hamlets dotting the route. After a long but scenic drive, you arrive at Lohajung, the base camp for Brahmatal Trek. Lohajung is surrounded by lush slopes and offers the first glimpse of Mt. Nanda Ghunti. An evening here can be spent exploring the small market or interacting with locals, who share fascinating stories of the Himalayas.

Route: Lohajung – Begum – Bekaltal campsite
Highlights: Dense oak and rhododendron forests, first snow patches, Bekaltal lake

Overview
The trek begins with a gradual climb through mixed forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron. The trail meanders through quaint resting spots like Begum, where the view of mountains creates a perfect backdrop. This day is about getting comfortable with the pace and soaking in the wilderness.

By afternoon, you reach Bekaltal, a serene campsite beside a small lake surrounded by forest cover. In winter, Bekaltal often remains frozen, reflecting the sunlight like a sheet of glass. The peaceful environment, combined with snow-draped surroundings, makes it one of the most charming halts of the trek.

Evening at camp is a cozy experience, with stories shared around bonfires under the starry Himalayan sky.

Route: Bekaltal – Telindi – Brahmatal campsite
Highlights: Open meadows, panoramic views, gradual snow terrain

Overview
Leaving Bekaltal behind, the trail climbs steadily through more rhododendron forests before opening into alpine meadows. The higher you climb, the grander the Himalayan views become. The clearings at Telindi are particularly mesmerizing, offering wide-angle vistas of snow-clad mountains.

By afternoon, you reach Brahmatal campsite, located near the iconic Brahmatal lake. This serene spot is surrounded by snowfields in winter, making it an unforgettable camping experience. On a clear evening, trekkers can witness alpenglow on Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, painting the peaks golden at sunset.

Camping here is often described as magical, with the silence of snow all around and a night sky full of stars.

Route: Brahmatal campsite – Brahmatal Lake – Brahmatal Top – return to campsite
Highlights: Summit views, Himalayan panorama, frozen lake

Overview
This is the most awaited day of the trek. The trail ascends gradually, circling around the frozen Brahmatal Lake. Legend says Lord Brahma meditated here, adding a touch of divinity to the already sacred landscape. The path beyond the lake leads to the Brahmatal Top, the highest point of the trek.

At the summit, you are rewarded with unparalleled views of Himalayan giants like Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Chaukhamba, Nilkanth, and distant glimpses of Panchachuli ranges. The 360-degree panorama from Brahmatal Top is breathtaking and makes the entire journey worthwhile.

After spending time at the summit, soaking in the views and capturing photographs, trekkers descend back to the Brahmatal campsite for a well-deserved rest.

Route: Brahmatal campsite – Daldum – Lohajung
Highlights: Downhill trek, forests, village views

Overview
The return journey begins with a descent through alpine meadows before re-entering dense oak and rhododendron forests. The route passes through Daldum, another scenic spot ideal for breaks and photography.

By afternoon, you reach Lohajung, completing the trekking circuit. The return feels different, as familiar trails now reveal new perspectives. An evening in Lohajung is often spent celebrating the successful trek, sharing experiences, and enjoying the hospitality of the village.

Route: Lohajung – Tharali – Karnaprayag – Rudraprayag – Devprayag – Rishikesh
Highlights: Mountain roads, river valleys, scenic drive

Overview
The final day is dedicated to driving back to Rishikesh. The descent through winding mountain roads brings you back to the river valleys, offering a reflective time to relive the trek’s highlights. By evening, you reach Rishikesh, where the journey concludes.
