Overview

The Himalayas are filled with high-altitude meadows that come alive in different shades across the seasons. Among these, Dayara Bugyal stands out as one of the most picturesque and accessible alpine meadows of Uttarakhand. Perched at an altitude of around 11,800 feet, Dayara Bugyal is a breathtaking expanse of rolling grasslands, dotted with patches of wildflowers, surrounded by dense forests, and crowned with uninterrupted views of some of the tallest Himalayan peaks.

The name “Bugyal” itself means “meadow” in the local Garhwali language, and Dayara Bugyal truly embodies the essence of a Himalayan grassland. Whether blanketed in snow during the winter, painted with wild blooms in summer, or adorned with golden-brown hues in autumn, it offers a panoramic charm that is unmatched. Its ease of access, coupled with the sheer beauty it offers, makes it one of the most sought-after trekking destinations in India.

Scenic Beauty of Dayara Bugyal

Dayara Bugyal is often described as a dreamlike landscape where the horizon stretches endlessly in every direction. The meadow covers an area of nearly 28 square kilometers, making it one of the largest high-altitude grasslands in the country. The undulating terrain of the Bugyal, gently sloping in parts and rising sharply in others, creates a canvas that constantly changes with light and seasons.

From the meadow, trekkers can enjoy jaw-dropping views of snow-clad Himalayan giants such as Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kala Nag), Draupadi ka Danda, Gangotri I, II, III, Jaonli, and Srikanth. These peaks dominate the skyline and glow brilliantly during sunrise and sunset, offering a photographer’s paradise.

In spring and summer, the meadow bursts into vibrant life with a riot of alpine flowers — blue poppies, primulas, and rhododendrons in full bloom. During monsoon, the meadows turn into a lush green carpet, feeding grazing cattle of the local shepherds. By autumn, the grass takes on golden-brown shades, giving the meadow a surreal touch. Winter transforms Dayara into a vast white wonderland, where snow carpets everything in sight and turns the Bugyal into an ideal ground for skiing and snow trekking .

● Altitude: Dehradun (2,100 ft) → Raithal (7,400 ft)

Highlights:
● Scenic drive along the Bhagirathi River, views of Himalayan villages, pine and oak forests. Raithal is the base village for the trek.

Your journey begins either from Rishikesh or Dehradun, which are well-connected by rail, road, and air. After meeting your trek leader and fellow trekkers, you’ll drive towards Raithal, the picturesque base village of Dayara Bugyal. The drive takes you along the banks of the mighty Bhagirathi River , passing through towns like Uttarkashi, Chinyalisaur, and Bhatwari.
Raithal, perched at around 7,400 feet, welcomes you with traditional wooden houses, terraced fields, and warm hospitality of the villagers. It is the perfect place to acclimatize before the trek begins. The cool mountain air and serene environment immediately set the mood for adventure.

● Overnight stay: Guesthouse or homestay in Raithal

● Trek Distance: 5 km (3–4 hrs)
● Altitude: Raithal (7,400 ft) → Gui (9,500 ft)

Highlights:
Gradual ascent through oak, rhododendron, and maple forests, camping in a beautiful meadow, clear views of Draupadi Ka Danda peak and Shrikhand Mahadev range

The real adventure begins today as you leave Raithal village and start trekking towards Gui. The trail gradually ascends through dense oak, maple, and rhododendron forests. During spring, these forests bloom with vibrant red and pink rhododendron flowers, while in winter, the path turns magical with snow underfoot.

As you climb higher, small clearings appear with glimpses of towering Himalayan peaks. Midway, you can stop to rest near natural springs and soak in the serenity of the forest. The sound of birds chirping and the cool breeze makes the climb pleasant.

Gui campsite, located at 9,500 feet, is a beautiful open clearing surrounded by thick woods. From here, the Bandarpoonch range is visible, especially during sunset when the mountains glow golden. The campsite offers a first taste of Himalayan camping — bonfires, starry skies, and the quiet charm of nature.

● Overnight stay: Tents at Gui campsite

● Trek Distance: 12 km (5–6 hrs, round trip)
● Altitude: Gui (9,500 ft) → Dayara Bugyal (12,000 ft)

Highlights:
Vast alpine meadows of Dayara Bugyal
360° views of Himalayan peaks: Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kalanag), Gangotri range, and Srikanth
Rolling grasslands, perfect for photography
Option to camp at Barnala Tal (10,200 ft), a small lake surrounded by pine trees.

This is the most awaited day of the trek — the day you reach Dayara Bugyal, one of the most stunning high-altitude meadows in India. Starting early in the morning, you ascend gradually from Gui through open meadows and patches of forest until the landscape opens dramatically into endless green pastures (or snowfields, depending on the season).

The sight of Dayara Bugyal is breathtaking — sprawling grasslands stretching as far as the eye can see, encircled by towering peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas. In summer, the meadows turn into a carpet of wildflowers, while in winter, they become a snow-covered wonderland.

The highlight is reaching Dayara Top at around 12,000 feet, where the full grandeur of the Himalayas unfolds. You can see Bandarpoonch, Srikanth, Gangotri peaks , and many unnamed snow-covered summits. This is the perfect spot for photography, relaxation, and simply absorbing the magnificence of the mountains.

After spending quality time at the top, enjoying packed lunch and exploring the meadow, you retrace your steps back to Gui campsite. Descending gives a different perspective of the trail, with evening light painting the valleys in surreal shades.

● Overnight stay: Tents at Gui campsite
● Special moment: Watching the stars from the meadow — the sky is incredibly clear and full of constellations.

● Trek Distance: 4–5 km descent (2–3 hrs)
● Road Distance: Raithal → Dehradun ~185 km (7–8 hrs drive)
● Altitude: From ~9,500 ft/10,200 ft down to Dehradun (2,100 ft)

Highlights:
Quick descent through forests, farewell to the meadows, scenic drive back along the Bhagirathi River valley.

On the final day, you descend from Gui back to Raithal along the same forested trail. The descent is much quicker and easier, allowing you to appreciate the natural beauty more calmly. Upon reaching Raithal, you can interact with locals, explore the traditional village homes, and enjoy a hot cup of tea before bidding farewell.

From Raithal, you begin the return drive to Dehradun or Rishikesh, marking the end of a memorable journey. Though short, the Dayara Bugyal trek leaves lasting impressions — the charm of high-altitude meadows, the thrill of camping under the stars, and the unparalleled Himalayan views stay with you forever.
