The Hampta Pass trek with Chandratal is one of the most spectacular and dramatic crossover treks in the Indian Himalayas. Starting from the lush green valleys of Kullu and ending in the barren, high-altitude desert of Lahaul-Spiti, this trek is a magnificent journey through diverse landscapes, vibrant meadows, snow-capped peaks, cascading waterfalls, and finally, the mesmerizing blue waters of Chandratal Lake, also known as the “Moon Lake.” This unique combination of alpine beauty and trans-Himalayan desert scenery makes the Hampta Pass trek a truly unforgettable adventure for nature lovers, trekkers, and photographers alike.

Organized by Vanvas Adventure, this trek offers the perfect blend of thrill, serenity, and cultural experience. Every day on this trail brings a new and breathtaking view—whether it’s the apple orchards of Manali, the meadows of Jobra, the stunning valley of Shea Goru, or the surreal beauty of Chandratal. Detailed Itinerary

Route: Manali – Prini – Sethan – Jobra – Chika
Trek Distance: 2 km (1.5–2 hours trek)
Drive Distance: 20 km (1.5 hours from Manali to Jobra)
Altitude Gain: 3,375 ft
Highlights: Scenic drive, lush pine forests, Rani Nallah stream, first night camping by the river.

Day Overview:
Your adventure begins at Manali, the gateway to Himachal’s great treks. Early morning, after breakfast and trek briefing, you’ll start with a short drive to Jobra (9,800 ft). The drive itself is a treat — winding through dense deodar and oak forests, with glimpses of apple orchards and the Beas River below.

At Jobra, you’ll meet your trek guide and team. The trail starts gently through a thick canopy of maple, pine, and birch trees. The air feels cooler and fresher as you ascend gradually towards Chika, your first campsite. The path runs parallel to the Rani Nallah, a sparkling mountain stream that stays with you throughout the day.

After an easy 2 km trek (around 1.5–2 hours), you’ll reach the Chika campsite (10,100 ft) — a wide, green meadow surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Settle into your tents, enjoy evening tea, and soak in the golden glow of sunset.

Evening Highlight: A breathtaking view of Indrasan and Deo Tibba peaks at sunset.

Route: Chika – Jwara – Balu ka Ghera
Trek Distance: 6 km (5–6 hours trek)
Altitude Gain: 1,800 ft
Highlights: Alpine meadows, wildflowers, waterfalls, and first view of Hampta Pass ridge.

Day Overview:
The morning begins with the soothing sound of the Rani Nallah and a warm breakfast amidst alpine beauty. Today’s trail is a gradual ascent that takes you deeper into the valley. You’ll cross lush meadows carpeted with colorful wildflowers and scattered boulders.

After 2 hours, you reach Jwara, a stunning valley where the snow from surrounding mountains melts into small streams. The place is alive with vibrant flowers like blue poppies and tiny yellow blossoms.

Beyond Jwara, the trail ascends more sharply as you approach Balu ka Ghera, literally translating to “heap of sand.” The name comes from the sandy riverbed formed by the melting glaciers. This area also serves as the base camp for the Hampta Pass crossing.

You can see snow patches on the higher slopes and the majestic Hampta Pass ridge in the distance. Camp here for the night under a blanket of stars.

Evening Highlight: The reflection of snowy peaks on the Rani Nallah as the sun sets behind the mountains.

Route: Balu ka Ghera – Hampta Pass – Shea Goru
Trek Distance: 8 km (7–8 hours trek)
Altitude Gain: +2,200 ft to the pass, then descent of 1,200 ft
Highlights: Crossing the Hampta Pass, panoramic views of Lahaul Valley, snowfields, adventure crossing streams and ridges.

Day Overview:
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. After an early breakfast, start your climb towards the Hampta Pass (14,100 ft) — the high point of the journey. The trail begins with a gentle incline over snow patches and boulders, then turns steeper as you approach the top.

As you climb, the landscape changes dramatically — the green Kullu Valley slowly fades behind you, and the brown, barren Lahaul Valley opens up ahead. At the Hampta Pass top, a breathtaking panorama unfolds: the peaks of Indrasan (20,410 ft) and Deo Tibba (19,688 ft) stand proudly amidst endless mountain ranges.

Spend some time at the pass, taking in the beauty and silence that only high-altitude passes offer. Afterward, begin a steep descent toward Shea Goru, the first campsite in Lahaul Valley. The descent can be slippery due to snow and loose gravel, so tread carefully.

Once at Shea Goru (12,900 ft), you’ll find yourself in a cold desert valley surrounded by towering mountains. The contrast between the lush green side you left behind and the stark, rugged landscape ahead is truly striking.

Evening Highlight: Starlit sky over Lahaul Valley — one of the clearest night skies you’ll ever see.

Route: Shea Goru – Chatru – Chhota Dara – Batal – Chandratal
Trek Distance: 7 km (4–5 hours trek to Chatru)
Drive Distance: 70 km (2–3 hours drive to Chandratal)
Altitude Gain: +3,200 ft to Chandratal
Highlights: Glacial streams, barren mountain deserts, road to Spiti, the mystical Chandratal Lake.

Day Overview:
The trail from Shea Goru to Chatru is mostly downhill, following the same glacial stream you crossed earlier. The terrain is rocky but rewarding — surrounded by high cliffs and icy streams that test your balance and patience.

After around 4–5 hours of descent, you reach Chatru (10,900 ft) — a scenic spot on the road connecting Manali and Kaza. It’s here that the lush greenery of Kullu gives way completely to the rugged beauty of Spiti’s high-altitude desert.

From Chatru, a thrilling jeep ride takes you along the dramatic Spiti highway toward Chandratal Lake (14,100 ft), often called the “Moon Lake.” The drive passes through Chhota Dara and Batal, following the Chandra River upstream.

As you approach Chandratal, the turquoise waters of the crescent-shaped lake appear suddenly amid a barren brown landscape — a sight so surreal it feels otherworldly.

Spend your evening by the lakeside, witnessing the sun painting shades of gold, orange, and purple over the crystal-clear water. Camping near the lake is restricted, so you’ll stay slightly below at the designated camping area.

Evening Highlight: Chandratal’s mystical reflection of moonlight under the star-studded Himalayan sky — an unforgettable moment of peace and wonder.

Route: Chandratal – Batal – Gramphu – Rohtang Pass – Manali
s Drive Distance: 120 km (6–7 hours)
Altitude Loss: -7,375 ft
Highlights: Drive along Chandra River, cross Rohtang Pass, scenic return to Manali.

Day Overview:
Wake up early to capture the first rays of sunrise over Chandratal Lake — the sight is beyond words. After breakfast, begin your return journey by jeep toward Manali. The drive takes you back along the Chandra River through Batal and Chhota Dara, where snow bridges and glacial streams add to the adventure.

The road from Gramphu to Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft) offers mesmerizing views of the Lahaul and Kullu Valleys, separated by the mighty mountain ranges. Rohtang is famous for its breathtaking switchbacks and panoramic views.

By evening, you reach Manali, bringing the incredible journey to an end. The transformation from the barren Spiti landscape to the lush greenery of Kullu is like traveling between two worlds in a single day.

Evening Highlight: Celebratory dinner in Manali — reminiscing about the unforgettable trek and the stunning contrasts of nature witnessed along the route.
