The Kedarkantha trek is one of the most celebrated winter treks in India, often described as the “Queen of Winter Treks.” Situated in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, it offers a complete Himalayan trekking experience in just a few days. From dense pine forests and frozen lakes to charming mountain villages and panoramic summit views, Kedarkantha has everything a trekker dreams of, making it suitable for both beginners and seasoned adventurers.

Location and Altitude

The trek begins at Sankri village, a quaint settlement at 6,400 feet surrounded by apple orchards and wooden houses. The trail takes you through scenic campsites and alpine clearings, eventually leading to the Kedarkantha summit at 12,500 feet (3,800 m). From the top, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of major Himalayan peaks, including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kalanag), Rupin Range, and even glimpses of the Yamunotri and Gangotri ranges.

Detailed Itinerary

● Route: Dehradun – Mussoorie – Purola – Mori – Netwar – Sankri
● Drive Distance: ~ 200 km
● Time: 8–9 hours
● Altitude: 6,400 ft

Your Kedarkantha winter adventure begins from Dehradun Railway Station/ISBT early morning. Vanvas Adventure arranges a comfortable tempo traveler/vehicle for trekkers. The drive itself feels like an initiation into the Himalayas.

The first stretch till Mussoorie (the “Queen of Hills”) gives glimpses of Doon Valley. Soon, the road dips into pine-scented valleys and ridges. After Purola, you’ll enter the lesser-traveled Govind Pashu Vihar Sanctuary region. The river Tons, believed to be the largest tributary of Yamuna, flows alongside, adding charm to the ride.

● Highlights:
○ Scenic drive along Tons River valley
○ Beautiful pine forests, apple orchards, and local villages
○ Stay at homestay/guesthouse in Sankri

By evening, you reach Sankri village, a wooden settlement perched amidst pine forests. Sankri is the base camp for several treks (Kedarkantha, Har Ki Dun, Bali Pass, etc.). Vanvas Adventure provides cozy guesthouse/homestay stays here. After dinner, the team briefs trekkers about safety, weather, and the next day’s trek.

● Altitude gain: 2,150 ft (Dehradun at ~4,250 ft to Sankri at ~6,400 ft)
● Stay: Guesthouse/homestay (warm beds, local cuisine).
● Tip: Charge your electronics here – it’s the last place with reliable electricity.

● Route: Gradual ascent through pine & maple forests
● Trek Distance: 4 km
● Trek Time: 4–5 hours
● Altitude Gain: 6,400 ft → 9,100 ft

After breakfast, your trek begins. Vanvas Adventure’s guides ensure everyone gets trekking gear checked (gaiters, microspikes if snow is heavy). The trail winds through dense pine, maple, and oak forests. In winter, snow carpets the trail, making every step dreamy.

Midway, you’ll see local shepherd huts and open clearings. The final stretch ascends to reach the mystical Juda ka Talab, a frozen high-altitude lake surrounded by giant pine trees. Legends say Lord Shiva once meditated here, and a droplet of water from his hair formed this lake.

● Highlights:
○ Camping near the frozen lake Juda Ka Talab in winters
○ Dense forest walk with snow cover (Dec–March)
○ Stunning views of snow-capped peaks

● Campsite Beauty:
○ Frozen Juda ka Talab turns into a natural ice field for photography.
○ Snow-clad pine forests around create a Christmas-card scene.
○ Open meadow beside the lake is ideal for camping.

Vanvas Adventure sets up well-insulated alpine tents with warm sleeping bags. The evening includes hot tea, snacks, and dinner around a bonfire (weather permitting).

● Stay: Tent at Juda Ka Talab
● Tip: Keep your water bottle inside the sleeping bag at night to prevent freezing.

● Route: Through dense pine forests and open meadows
● Trek Distance: 4 km
● Trek Time: 3–4 hours
● Altitude Gain: 9,100 ft → 11,200 ft

This day’s trek is short yet scenic. The trail opens up into clearings and meadows offering first clear glimpses of Kedarkantha Peak. You walk across snowfields, cross brooks, and enter thickets of oak and rhododendron. In winters, the rhododendrons shed leaves, giving the forest a mysterious aura.

By afternoon, you reach Kedarkantha Base Camp, a vast open snowfield with panoramic views of peaks like Swargarohini, Kala Nag, and Bandarpoonch.

● Highlights:
○ Wide clearings with panoramic mountain views
○ Campsite facing Swargarohini, Black Peak, Bandarpoonch ranges
○ Best sunset views of the trek

● Base Camp Life with Vanvas Adventure:
○ Well-secured snow tents with floor insulation
○ Evening acclimatization walk for summit prep
○ Hot soup and warm meals served in the dining tent
○ Guide’s detailed briefing about summit climb

The evening is magical as golden light falls on the snowy peaks. Most trekkers sleep early for the midnight/early morning summit push.

● Stay: Tent at Base Camp
● Tip: Dress in layers – temperatures here can drop to -8°C to -10°C at night.

● Route:
○ Early morning summit climb (steep ascent, 3 hrs)
○ 360° views from summit
○ Overnight camping at Juda Ka Talab.
● Trek Distance: 6 km (Summit up & descend)
● Trek Time: 7–8 hours
● Altitude: 11,200 ft → 12,500 ft (Summit) → descend to 8,900 ft

This is the most awaited day of the trek. The summit climb usually starts around 2–3 AM to catch sunrise. Equipped with headlamps and spikes, you walk steadily on the snowy ridge. The climb is gradual but feels challenging due to cold and altitude.

Finally, you reach the Kedarkantha Summit at 12,500 ft. A small Lord Shiva shrine and Trishul adorn the top. As the first rays of sun strike, the entire Himalayan panorama lights up – from Gangotri, Yamunotri, Swargarohini, to Himachal peaks like Rupin and Buran ranges.

● Highlights:
○ 360° Himalayan view of Swargarohini, Black Peak, Yamunotri & Gangotri ranges
○ Breathtaking sunrise from summit
○ Descend through meadows & forests

● Why Summit Day is Special:
○ Sunrise at 12,500 ft – unforgettable sight
○ Spiritual aura at Shiva shrine on top

After spending 30–40 minutes on top, you descend back to Base Camp for rest and food. Depending on energy and time, many groups descend further to Hargaon campsite (8,900 ft), reducing next day’s walk.

● Stay: Tent at Base Camp (as per pace/weather).
● Tip: Keep extra pair of gloves – summit mornings are freezing

● Trek Distance: 6 km trek
● Trek Time: 3–4 hours
● Drive Distance: 200 km drive back to Dehradun (~8–9 hrs)
● Altitude: 8,900 ft → 6,400 ft → 2,150 ft

● Highlights:
○ Easy forest trail back to Sankri
○ Return drive along Tons River valley
○ Trek ends in Dehradun by evening

The last trek day is a gentle downhill walk through dense pine and oak forests. As you approach Sankri , the snowy world slowly gives way to green orchards and wooden houses. After reaching Sankri , you freshen up at the base lodge and bid farewell to the mountains.

Vanvas Adventure arranges the return transport to Dehradun. You’ll carry back not just photographs but a heart full of Himalayan memories, friendships, and the peace only mountains bring.

Best Time to Visit kedarkantha

Kedarkantha Trek, located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, is one of the most popular winter treks in India, offering snow-covered landscapes, panoramic views of the Himalayas, and a moderately challenging route suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers alike. The best time to visit Kedarkantha largely depends on the kind of experience you are seeking.

Winter (December to March):
This is the most popular time for Kedarkantha Trek. During these months, the region is covered in thick snow, making it perfect for snow trekking and camping in a winter wonderland. Daytime temperatures range from 2°C to 10°C, while nights can drop sharply to -5°C to -10°C at the summit. Snow adds charm and adventure but also requires proper winter trekking gear, including insulated clothing, gloves, and trekking shoes with good grip.

Summer (April to June):
Spring and early summer offer a completely different experience. The trek is easier without snow, trails are green, and wildflowers bloom across the meadows. Day temperatures during this period are comfortable, around 12°C to 20°C, while nights are cooler at 5°C to 10°C. This season is ideal for those who prefer moderate temperatures and a less challenging trek without snow.

  • Waterproof gloves, woollen socks, balaclava, cap
  • Trek pants (quick-dry), thermal inners

● Trek Gear recommended to check:

  • Trekking shoes (waterproof, good grip)
  • Backpack (40–50 L with rain cover)
  • Headlamp with extra batteries

● Other Essentials:

  • Sunglasses (for snow blindness)
  • Sunscreen & lip balm (SPF 40+)
  • Reusable water bottle/thermos

Kedarkantha Trek Safety and Preparation Guide with Vanvas Adventure

1.Physical Preparation:
Trekking at high altitudes requires stamina and endurance. Begin physical conditioning at least 4–6 weeks before the trek. Focus on:
Cardiovascular exercises such as jogging, brisk walking, or cycling to improve lung capacity.
Leg strength training including squats, lunges, and step-ups for uphill climbs.
Core strengthening exercises like planks and sit-ups for balance during steep or uneven trails.
Regular morning walks in hilly terrain are highly recommended to acclimatize your body to altitude variations.

2. Clothing and Gear:
Proper clothing is crucial in cold, snowy conditions:
Layering is essential: thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, and a waterproof outer shell.
Trekking pants that are warm, water-resistant, and flexible.
Quality gloves, woolen socks, and a beanie to protect extremities.
Sturdy trekking shoes or snow boots with good grip to prevent slipping.
Backpack essentials: water bottles, sunscreen, sunglasses, headlamp, trekking poles, and first-aid kit.
Vanvas Adventure provides guidance on recommended gear and ensures that trekkers are well-equipped for snow and cold weather.
